Spirituality – An Overview

Carl Gustav Jung acknowledged spirituality as an integral aspect of human nature and a vital force in human life.

According to William James:

"Our normal working consciousness, rational as we call it, is but one special type of consciousness, whilst all about it, parted from it by the filmiest of the screens, there lie potential forms of consciousness entirely different.

The fundamental goal of India's spiritual culture is to bring about the identification of the individual consciousness with the universal consciousness, which is the supreme Reality.

According to Shankaracharya, understanding the truth about the unity of Atman and Brahman is the only essential teaching of the Vedas. All other statements therein are used to buttress or enforce this one fundamental truth. According to the Upanishad "knowing Him alone, one conquers death. There is no other way to immortality." Knowing Him, in Vedanta is, the identification of Atman (individual soul) with Brahman (Universal soul). This is verily the way to conquer death.

The identification of mortal human being with the immortal Self within is a total transformation of a flesh and blood entity into a being enlightened by the light of Self. After realization one sees one's Self in all living beings and thus attains to immortality. According to Ken Upanishad, by seeing oneself in all living beings, the wise man transcends his body-mind and this relative existence, and finally gets established in immortality. According to Chandogya Upanishad, "the self — realized man fully established in total contentment emerges out of and transcends this old body and being enriched with the light of self within, is established in his divine blissful form. He verily is the best of human beings." This according to Vedanta is the highest human evolution-transformation of Jesus into Christ the Saviour, or Siddhartha Gautam to Buddha the enlightened one.

The message of Sri Ramakrishna inspires humanity to this final destination; The goal of human life is realization of God.
